President and Chief Marketing Officer

Duke Merhavy, MBA, Ph.D.
After more than three decades helping businesses grow, Duke Merhavy, Ph.D. has observed that business leaders are presented with more marketing opportunities than ever before. The challenge is rarely generating new ideas. It’s determining which ones will have the greatest impact on the business.

Throughout his career, Duke has found that sustainable growth rarely begins by asking, “What marketing should we do?” Instead, it begins by asking a more fundamental question: “What problem are we really trying to solve?”

That perspective has shaped his approach to marketing leadership throughout his career and ultimately led to the founding of Fractional CMO & Marketing in 2014. Today, he helps organizations accelerate growth and improve profitability by bringing executive-level marketing leadership to companies that need the experience of a Chief Marketing Officer without the cost and commitment of a full-time executive.

Bringing Executive Leadership to Growing Businesses

Before founding Fractional CMO & Marketing, Duke served in senior leadership positions including Director of Marketing, Vice President of Marketing, Chief Marketing Officer, and Chief Operating Officer. Working across technology, manufacturing, engineering, professional services, consulting, real estate, and security, he recognized a recurring challenge among small and medium-sized businesses.

Large organizations often benefit from experienced executives who establish priorities, develop strategy, coordinate implementation, and ensure that every marketing initiative supports the company’s broader business objectives.

Many growing businesses, however, lack that leadership. Marketing responsibilities are frequently divided among employees, agencies, freelancers, and specialized vendors—each contributing valuable expertise, but often without anyone responsible for directing the overall strategy.

The result is what Duke has often described as “random acts of marketing.” Individual activities may be well executed, but without strategic direction, they rarely build lasting momentum.

Recognizing that gap inspired Duke to establish Fractional CMO & Marketing, providing growing companies with executive marketing leadership on a fractional basis so they can benefit from strategic guidance, coordinated implementation, and ongoing accountability.

A Different Way of Looking at Marketing

Throughout his career, Duke has learned that marketing challenges are rarely as straightforward as they first appear. Businesses often assume they have a lead generation problem, a branding problem, or a website problem, when those visible issues are actually symptoms of something deeper.

Rather than beginning with tactics, Duke begins by understanding the business itself—its goals, customers, competitive environment, market position, available resources, and the factors that are truly influencing growth. Only after that foundation has been established does it become possible to determine which strategies and tactics are most likely to produce meaningful results.

That philosophy is reflected in the principle that guides every client engagement: Understand before prescribing.

Timeless Principles

Over the course of Duke’s career, marketing has evolved dramatically. Digital marketing transformed the industry. Social media changed the way organizations communicate. Artificial intelligence is now reshaping how businesses create content, analyze information, and interact with customers.

Despite these changes, Duke believes the fundamental principles of effective marketing have remained remarkably consistent. Organizations still need to understand their customers, create meaningful value, build trust, communicate clearly, and make disciplined strategic decisions. While technologies and tactics will continue to evolve, those fundamentals remain the foundation of sustainable business growth.

That perspective has led to one of Duke’s most frequently repeated observations: Marketing activities without strategy create motion, not momentum.

In Duke’s experience, a sound strategy does more than identify what a business should do. It also establishes priorities and clarifies what the business should not do. Focus is often a greater competitive advantage than simply doing more.

Leadership Through Implementation

Developing a strategy is only the beginning. Duke believes leadership carries the responsibility of seeing that strategy through to implementation and measurable results.

Rather than delivering recommendations and stepping aside, he works alongside business owners, leadership teams, employees, and specialized marketing vendors to coordinate execution, solve problems as they arise, and continually evaluate performance. His role is not simply to provide advice, but to help ensure that plans are translated into meaningful business outcomes.

Clients often describe Duke as candid, collaborative, analytical, and willing to ask difficult questions when necessary. Perhaps the strongest endorsement of his work is that many executives have invited him to help lead marketing at multiple companies throughout their careers—an indication of the trust and confidence built through long-term professional relationships.

Leadership Built on Integrity

Technical expertise and strategic thinking are important qualities in any advisor. Duke believes, however, that trust is earned through integrity.

For that reason, he does not accept commissions, referral fees, or revenue-sharing arrangements from software providers, media companies, or marketing vendors engaged by his clients. When discounts or incentives are available, he believes they should benefit the client—not the consultant.

His responsibility is to recommend the solution that best serves the client’s interests, regardless of who provides it.

Experience That Shapes Perspective

Before entering the business world, Duke served as a Captain in the Israeli Military Intelligence. The experience helped develop the discipline, analytical thinking, leadership, and decision-making skills that continue to influence his approach to solving complex business challenges.

He later earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Business Administration degrees from Binghamton University, followed by a Doctorate in Business Administration from California Pacific University.

Today, Duke continues to study emerging technologies, leadership, and marketing trends, believing that while tools continue to evolve, learning should never stop.

Looking Ahead

The marketing profession will undoubtedly continue to evolve. Artificial intelligence will become more capable, new technologies will emerge, and businesses will continue adapting to changing customer expectations.

While those changes will influence how marketing is executed, Duke believes they will not change what makes marketing successful. Organizations that understand their customers, make disciplined strategic decisions, execute effectively, and continually measure results will continue to outperform those that simply pursue the latest tactics or technologies.

That belief has guided Duke throughout his career and continues to shape every client engagement today.
